陈楚蕙 香港潮

玩贞(1941~)汕尾市陆丰县湖东镇人。广东潮剧院青衣演员。1957年考入汕头戏曲演员培训班,受教于潮剧名教戏林和忍、黄玉斗。黄清城等。首本戏为《收浪子尸》、《蔡伯喈认像》等。1958年调广东潮剧院,近几年参加海声潮剧团。

    在潮剧舞台近40年,扮演过几十个不同的人物角色。她
扮演的《柴房会》莫二娘,1962年参加丑戏会演,获得专家
和观众的好评,以后塑造人物角色有《袁崇焕》的袁夫人,
《薛刚闹花灯》的程夫人,《王莽篡位》的吴母,《刘璋下山》的吕后,《扛石》的丘孝妻等,现代戏有《万山红》的春嫂,《迎风山》的李花等。林玩贞唱腔优

Teochew Opera -

陈楚蕙 and 陈碧霞 in 薛丁山与樊梨花 我特地请假,去新山捧该团演出戏宝'一门三进士'。当晚的演出除了陈楚蕙饰演周子卿,何碧端饰演常天宝, 沈惠贞饰演梅秀兰, 沈妙珍饰演林美英, 沈湘玉饰演孙淑林, 还有久未了的张应炎饰演张文元。
Tan Chor Hwee will be back on stage again. However, the stage performance will take place in JB instead of Singapore. According to a newspaper article, 陈楚蕙 will be pairing up with 沈惠贞 of China this time.

staged a few months of performances in Thailand. Then, one of my sister’s friends managed to get a set of video tapes of 五 龙 会 or later known as 五子挂帅. We were excited to watch the video although the quality was not very good. We waited patiently for her arrival as the market in Singapore is not big compared to Thailand.

During the lunar 7th month hungry ghost festival in the l970s, I would go out for wayang performance if there were opera troupes performing in the nearby blocks. How did i get to know the details? You wondered. During that time, the organisers would paste a red A1 size red flyer/poster stating the dates, the name of troupe and the location. We would definitely go out if the performances took place over the weekends. You could still find such A1 poster nowadays but is confined to areas in the market place.

There was a wet market located at Lorong 4 Toa Payoh between Block 92 and Block 95. It was a regular place for street opera. We went there very often as it was very near our flat. I remembered watching 刘璋下山 and 雷峰塔 (Madam White Snake) by 老正天香潮剧团.


For 刘璋下山, we waited patiently till close to 10 pm to see the actress who played the male lead 刘璋. My eldest sister was with us and she knew the plot very well. The first two hours featured how the Han Emperor struggled to retain power and how 刘璋 escaped from death when he was a small boy. Then 刘璋 grew up and was trained by his master to be a very skillful swordsman. Unfortunately, he was inexperienced and saved his enemies instead and later had to behead his father to gain trust from the Empress. 陈 楚 蕙 also performed the role as 刘璋 in the movie 刘璋下山 with 曾珊凤. These two photos of 陈楚蕙 were taken when she peformed in the then Palace cinema in Katong more than 2 decades ago. I heard she regretted having performed there because many fans did not find the location convenient and she must have reaped in the least profit for the time and effort put in.

She made a return after she stopped performing in Singapore for many years. Normally, she would stage her performance in Thailand first as she had a lot of businesses and supporters in Thailand. In fact, five years ago, ie 1982, she staged a few months of performances in Thailand. Then, one of my sister’s friends managed to get a set of video tapes of 五 龙 会 or later known as 五子挂帅. 陈楚蕙 performed many popular shows in Thailand and they were available on video. Some of the shows were 红鬃烈马, 借剑, 碧海丹心, 孟丽君 and 红书宝剑. The following pages capture pictures of her performances in Thailand.

She looks fantastic when dressed and dolled up. 陈楚蕙 is deeply loved by the audience not only because of her acting skills but also because she is humble and has excellent interpersonal skills.

一九八七年,陈楚惠出人意外地亲率新天彩潮剧团,又一次来到新加坡。那时候,中国广东潮剧团已经前后来过三次,由中国输入本邦的录音、录相充斥市场,以香港潮剧团的水准,在本地还能卖座吗?谁都不敢有太大的信心,唯独可以略为壮胆的,只有"陈楚惠"三个字。出钱赞助主办的人,也都抱着亏本无所谓的心态,要给陈楚惠一个考验。为了减轻成本负担,部分乐员及配角都在新加坡临时聘用。陈楚惠在牛车水人民剧场演足了一个月,星期天还要加演日场,票房纪录却是有增无减。就在这个时候,由国这剧场主办的中国广东潮剧团第二团,也来到新加坡,由郑健英挂帅,在嘉龙剧场开锣上阵。好个陈楚惠,竟宣布展演十天,与广东潮剧团演对台戏,而在这最后十天中,仍然夜夜爆满。她在人民剧场院共四十天,演了四十四场戏,不论新剧目或旧剧目
